April 28-29, 1997 – NIH, Bethesda, MD. International Conference on Lyme Borreliosis & Other Tick-Borne Disorders: Chronic Lyme Disease; Basic Science & Clinical Approaches.

Presentations included the Cost-to-Society study of the financial burden of Lyme disease to patients. Another talk was the LDF pregnancy & Lyme study, where all pregnant women received treatment and had positive outcomes. Willy stated that some people assume ticks of short duration attachment do not transmit disease. He calls that view both “False and Risky” because he knows that 10% of ticks can have systemic infection, meaning the pathogen is already in their mouthparts.

NIH presented Karen with an award for her and the LDF’s years of dedication to educational scientific excellence, highest ethical standards, and outstanding public awareness.
